SUMMARY:ALZHEIMER’S EDUCATIONAL SERIES FOR CAREGIVERS
DESCRIPTION:Do You Have a Loved One Suffering from Alzheimer’s? \nMany families try to deal with Alzheimer’s and dementia care challenges while keeping loved ones at home. These educational sessions will focus on practical techniques for home caregivers to improve quality of care for people with dementia\, as well as reduce the stress on caregivers. \nThe program series will consist of 12 sessions (1 hour each) using the science of cognitive ergonomics and neuroscience research to improve the quality of life for people with Alzheimer’s and dementia. The sessions will take place at Hospice of Dayton and will be presented by Dr. Govind Bharwani\, a nationally recognized expert in Alzheimer’s and dementia care. Dr. Bharwani’s work has received six national awards for its impact on reducing medications for agitation and challenging behaviors. \nEach session will be held the last Tuesday each month 6 – 7:30 p.m. \nApril 25: Session 1 Anatomy of the Brain and Memory Function  (plus Lewy Body Dementia)\nMay 30: Session 2 Basic Understanding of Neuroscience and Dementia  (plus Vascular Dementia)\nJune 27: Session 3 The Effect of Alzheimer’s Disease on Brain Function  (plus Frontal Lobe Dementia)\nJuly 25: Session 4 Stages of Alzheimer’s Disease and Emotional Stress on People with Dementia (plus Parkinson’s Disease)\nAugust 29: Session 5 How to Communicate and Interact with People with Dementia  (plus Huntington’s Disease)\nSeptember 26: Session 6 Impact on Memory and Communication Function of People with Dementia (plus Down Syndrome and Pick’s Disease)\nOctober 31: Session 7 The Effect of Environment on Behaviors of People with Dementia (plus Wandering Behavior and Sundowning)\nNovember 28: Session 8 Neuroscience Approach to Feeding\, Bathing and Other Activities of Daily Living (plus Sexual Behavior and Combativeness)\nJanuary 30\, 2018: Session 9 Neuroscience Approach to Massage and Aromatherapy  (plus Depression\, Delusion and Delirium)\nFebruary 27\, 2018: Session 10 How to Manage Difficult Behaviors (plus Repetition and Hoarding Behaviors)\nMarch 27\, 2018: Session 11 How to Use Comforting and Stimulating Therapies  (plus Rummaging and Shadowing Behaviors)\nApril 24\, 2018: Session 12 Safety and Ergonomic Tips for Home Caregivers (plus Suspicious and Hallucination Behaviors)\n* Special Topic(s) for each session listed in parenthesis \nPresented by Wright State University\, Ohio’s Hospice of Dayton and the Greater Dayton Brain Health Foundation\, this series offers education for caregivers of Alzheimer’s patients.
